This is a beautiful spot in North East Germany. It's tucked out of the way so a 5 hour, pleasant train journey from Cologne.

Although the the revenue is from tourism the these are full size steam trains running on a fairly extensive network. An accident of fate as this was a military zone and listening post in while Germany was divided and the railway didn't get modernised.

The Route

London St Pancras -Eurostar- Brussels -ICE- Cologne -ICE- Hannover -Regional- Goslar -Regional- Wernigerode

I used pre-booked tickets and reservations for this trip. DB were offering a 59 Euro Ticket including Eurostar. As there were 6 people travelling this had to booked directly with DB by phone as couldn't book than 5 seats online.

We travelled to Cologne on the day 1 and then on to Wernigerode on day 2. We stopped for lunch at Goslar. A beautiful small town with luggage lockers at the station.

German trains serve beer in glasses, very civilised
